CFO Atwater highlights dim-witted scammers during March “Fraud Prevention Month”

In perhaps the first official fraud-shaming initiative, CFO Jeff Atwater will be releasing Florida’s “top dim-witted fraud criminals” throughout the month of March.

Announced Wednesday, Atwater believes this initiative will raise awareness of the impact of insurance fraud on consumers, and serve as a reminder to would-be criminals that justice will be served to those caught cheating the system.

Florida is a hotbed of Medicare, auto and PIP fraud, workers’ comp fraud, life insurance and disability fraud… you name it.  A breakdown of referrals to the Division of Insurance Fraud shows that the crafty and dim-witted alike target every possible avenue for false payout.

Though only barely “fraud”, nothing gets better than this:  also Wednesday, a 51-year-old St. Petersburg man was arrested for drunk-dialing 911 three times, complaining that his cell phone wasn’t working, and then… it gets better… saying that his drug dealer was mad at him.  The Tampa Bay Times report suggested that it was a new phone and apparently could only dial 911 until activated, which he “could not do in his intoxicated state…”
