One of college football’s most memorable plays will be one of FSU’s most forgettable.
A blocked kick returned 78 yards for the winning touchdown on the final play of the game doomed the Seminoles to a 22-16 loss to Georgia Tech Saturday night and put FSU on the outside of the college playoff looking in.
Roberto Aguayo, who had never missed in the fourth quarter, was lining up for a game-winning field goal on the final play of the game. It was blocked, however, and Tech’s Lance Austin picked it up and rambled 78 yards for the winning score.
Georgia Tech had lost five straight games before this one, but it gave FSU all it wanted. It intercepted a pass in the end zone in the final quarter, a tipped pass that was Everett Golson’s first turnover of the year.
Dalvin Cook had only 82 yards on 17 carries for FSU, and Tech outrushed the Seminoles as a team 261-70.
Clemson 58, Miami 0: At a time that the University of Miami was supposed to be arguing for coach Al Golden, the Hurricanes instead provided evidence against him.
The criticism of Golden is sure to grow this week after the Hurricanes suffered the worst defeat in the 90-year history of the program Saturday when Clemson came into Miami and took a 58-0 win over the Hurricanes.
It was an embarrassing afternoon for Miami, which trailed 21-0 after one period and 42-0 by the half. The Canes were outgained 567 yards to 146 on the afternoon. On the ground, UM was outgained 416 yards to 53, and Clemson rolled up 33 first downs to six for Miami.
Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya, the leading passer in the ACC, left the game after a blow to the head in the second period. He had only 51 yards at the time.
The Hurricanes play against Duke Saturday.
USF 38, SMU 14: Quarterback Quinton Flowers turned a football game into an individual highlight tape Saturday afternoon to lead USF to its third consecutive win.
Flowers ran for 201 yards, the most by any quarterback in the FBS this season, and threw for 97 more to lead the Bulls to their win. It was the first time since 2011 the Bulls have won three straight. This time, the Bulls have outscored opponents 111-58.
With running back Marlon Mack out with his hamstring injury, the Bulls turned to Flowers, who ran for three touchdowns. He was shaken up on his last one, a helicoptering score in the corner of the end zone.
The Bulls visit Navy next week.
FIU 41, Old Dominion 12: Old Dominion had no answers for a young quarterback Saturday afternoon.
FIU’s Alex McGough threw for 390 yards – hitting 31 of 39 passes – and three touchdowns for the Panthers. McGough connected with Jonnu Smith 10 times for 183 yards and two scores. Alex Gardner added 96 yards rushing.
The Panthers led 17-6 at the half, then added 24 second half points to even their record at 4-4 on the year. For Old Dominion, Ray Lawry carried 22 times for 161 yards on the ground.
FIU plays rival FAU Saturday.
UTEP 27, FAU 17: Mark Leftwich threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night as UTEP beat Florida Atlantic.
FAU had taken a 17-14 lead at the half, but didn’t score again. Jaquez Jones threw for 263 yards for the Owls. Trey Rodriguez ran seven times for 114 yards. Jenson Stoshak rushed for 130 yards.
Three turnovers cost the Owls, who play FIU Saturday.
Houston 59, UCF 10: Unbeaten Houston let UCF hang around for a quarter. But not much longer.
The Cougars ran their record to 7-0 against the winless Knights, although UCF led 10-7 early. After that, however, the game belonged to Houston. Running back Kenneth Farlow gained 167 yards for the Cougars. Houston gained 600 yards on the day.
UCF fell to 0-8 on the season. The Knights will be a heavy underdog to Cincinnati next week.
