David Mulder drops out of HD 27 race, leaves David Santiago unopposed

David Santiago is one step closer to representing part of Volusia County in Tallahassee next year. His opponent, former Deltona Mayor Dennis Mulder, dropped out of the race for Florida House District 27 over the weekend.

Mulder cited health problems with his young son as his reason for leaving the race.

The redrawn district 27 includes much of southern Volusia County, from DeBary and Deltona to Oak Hill.

Mulder was elected mayor of Deltona in 2005 at the age of 27, and served until 2011. He was one of the youngest mayors in the country.

His term was not without controversy though. He tried to get the city to form a police force, instead of relying on the sheriff’s office. Some accused him of being a divisive figure in city hall.

David Santiago is a former Deltona city commissioner.
