Democrat Frank Bruno outraised Republican rival Rep. Dorothy Hukill during the first quarter, but Hukill still has far outpaced Bruno in overall fundraising in their bid for the new Senate District 8 running from Interstate 75 near Ocala to the Atlantic coast south of Daytona. Bruno, the Volusia County chairman, brought in $30,465 during the three month period to $17,305 for Hukill. But Hukill was barred from raising money during most of the period because the Legislature was in session. The Port Orange Republican has raised more than $232,000 overall to Bruno’s $176,668. He’s also getting some help from state Democrats paying for staff. The district is just over half Republican in registration.
