James DeMio, a licensed Florida real estate Broker with over 20 years of residential and commercial real estate appraisal, sales and property management experience, filed to run today as the Democratic candidate for the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s office.

As a small business owner and realtor who has seen firsthand the problems that property owners throughout Hillsborough County have faced through these tough economic times, DeMio pledges to change the culture at the Property Appraiser’s office to make the process more open and fairer to everyone in Hillsborough County.
“After sixteen years in office, it’s time to change the current system and unfriendly climate of the appraiser’s office to help all the citizens of Hillsborough County instead of a select few who can afford to hire expensive lobbyists to reduce their tax bill. As articles in the local newspapers have documented (http://www.sptimes.com/2007/11/25/State/Soldiers_of_fortune.shtml), there is a cottage industry of lobbyists who have profited handsomely from the fact that the property appraiser has not done his job properly “ according to Mr. DeMio. “The behind closed doors process of unregulated lobbyists changing tax bills with lax oversight and poor documentation, that was cited in a 1990 statewide grand jury criticizing the property appraisers for the process that is currently in place in Hillsborough County, will change when James DeMio is elected in November. The taxpayers, the public and the media have a right to know what is going on.”
Hillsborough County Democratic Party Chairman, Chris Mitchell says, “The current property appraiser has been quick to raise taxes on property owners when times were booming, but slow to reduce taxes during our current economic downturn. All property owners throughout Hillsborough County need help and deserve better representation. James DeMio will bring his background, experience and qualifications to the property appraiser’s office and establish a new openness and fairness to the current process.”
Mr. DeMio received his Bachelor’s Degree from Ohio State University in 1989 in Business and Finance. In 1990, Mr. DeMio was an administrator of the Housing Court division of the Cleveland Municipal Court. For 10 years Mr. DeMio oversaw the multi-million dollar budget, payroll and purchasing of the 40 employee division that oversaw all the civil and criminal enforcement of housing, building, fire, zoning, health, waste collection, sidewalk, agricultural, air pollution laws and landlord tenant disputes in the municipality.
Mr. DeMio currently is the broker/owner of Florida Property International in Tampa and has sold millions of dollars of residential and commercial real estate to local and international clients. Mr. DeMio is a member of the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors, Florida Gulf Coast Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, International Realtors Association, National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals and World Trade Center of Tampa Bay. Mr. DeMio is a volunteer and donor to the American Red Cross and McDonald Training Center.
