Manny Garcia, executive editor of El Nuevo Herald, announced he is leaving the Spanish-language daily Oct. 18 for a role with another Florida newspaper. El Nuevo is the sister paper of The Miami Herald.
“This has been an extremely difficult decision for me to make,” Garcia told reporters Wednesday, “because being editor of El Nuevo Herald has been the most satisfying experience in my 23 year career at the Miami Herald Media Company.”
Garcia has been editor of El Nuevo since 2009, after years as police and courts reporter, city editor and senior editor of the Herald.
During his time as editor of El Nuevo, the daily was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Haiti earthquakes in 2010. It was the first time a Spanish-language paper received the honor.
David Landsberg, publisher of the Miami Herald Media Company, praised Garcia’s long career with the paper as he announced the search for a new editor for El Nuevo.
