Florida Democrats are falling short in their push to toughen gun laws following the massacre of 49 club patrons in Orlando.
New totals released Friday show that Democrats will not be able to secure enough votes needed to call a special session.
Democrats this week triggered an obscure state law that requires Secretary of State Kent Detzner to poll all 160 members. A yes vote by three-fifths of the Legislature – 96 votes – would result in a special session.
The Department of State reported that so far 111 legislators have voted. There have been 66 no votes and 45 yes votes.
Democrats want to prevent known terrorists and those on the no-fly and FBI watch lists from legally obtaining a gun license. The proposed legislation would also require a thorough investigation of anyone removed from those lists who wants to obtain a gun.
