The Florida chapter of the Service Employees International Union has endorsed Joanne Lentino for the District 1 at-large seat on the Pinellas County School Board.

“SEIU Florida has endorsed Joanne Lentino … because we are confident she will bring people together to improve the academic success of all children in Pinellas County,” said Alphonso Mayfield, president of SEIU’s Florida Public Services Union. “She has the experience, integrity and community spirit to get the job done. We will be activating our networks and mobilizing our membership in order to maximize our impact in her race.”

Lentino said she was pleased to receive the endorsement of a group she admires.

“(SEIU Florida) is an organization that I respect and admire for its service to the community,” Lentino said. “I look forward to serving on the school board to represent our students and the diverse and talented staff working hard every day in Pinellas County Schools.”

SEIU Florida represents active and retired public employees, healthcare professionals and property service workers in the state of Florida. SEIU members work in Florida’s public schools, city and county governments, hospitals, nursing homes, malls, community colleges, and universities.

Lentino is a recently retired teacher who taught in Pinellas County schools for 10 years. She continues to teach students and volunteer in the community. She moved to Pinellas in 2003 after working for the city of Las Vegas Cultural Affairs Division where she managed the center’s budget, grant proposals, full-time staff, and day-to-day operations. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

Lentino is running against Matt Stewart for the District 1 seat.

Stewart is a Pinellas County native who works as a human resources manager for Hillsborough County and is on the adjunct faculty for St. Petersburg College.

The non-partisan District 1 seat is run countywide. The election is Nov. 8.
