Football flashback: North Carolina started Miami slide in Butch Bowl

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For the first time in years, it seems, the Miami Hurricanes are happy with their head football coach. Perhaps they will continue to be.

So far, Mark Richt has brought prosperity back to the Hurricanes. They’re 4-1 and ranked 16th in his first season, the only loss coming when FSU blocked at extra point at the end of the game.

Of course, there have been other seasons that UM was happy with its coach, including much of the tenure of Butch Davis, the coach that Miami shared with North Carolina.

The first Butch Bowl was back in 2007, when his 1-4 Tar Heels played against the 4-1 Hurricanes. Surprisingly, North Carolina jumped to a 27-0 lead in the first half, then held on for a 33-27 victory. Kyle Wright threw for 302 yards for the Hurricanes but sufferered four interceptions.

Winning the game is the most important thing for this football team,” Davis said. “My total focus is on the University of North Carolina football team and I’m just proud of the way our kids performed.”

In the previous season, UM had lost a staggering six games. The 2007 team had a losing record with 5-7.

Since that season, UM has lost at least four games every year until this year.
