Gwen Graham campaign workers distributed 92 Jimmy Buffett tickets Tuesday within 10 minutes of opening the door to their north Tallahassee office. First in line was Emily, who declined to give her last name but did say she arrived at the office at 3:00 p.m., two hours before the campaign was to begin handing out tickets to the Oct. 29 get-out-the-vote rally featuring Buffett.
Graham, a Democrat, is engaged in a hotly contested race challenging Congressman Steve Southerland for Florida’s 2 –nd District seat. The race is among a handful of congressional races national pundits say the incumbent could lose.
“We love Gwen Graham. And Gov. Graham,” said Mary Kay Campbell who recalled dancing with then Gov. Graham at a a Florida State University Jimmy Buffett concert when she was a student.
“And who doesn’t like Jimmy Buffett,” Campbell said waving her ticket to the delight of others waiting in line.
Former Gov. Graham and First Lady Adele Graham are scheduled to attend the rally with candidate Gwen and Buffett. In a 1985 Capitol Press Corps skit Graham and Buffett switched roles with the Governor appearing in a Jimmy Buffett outfit and Buffett in a blue business suit that Graham usually wore. Graham has also appeared in a Buffett music video when he posed as a tourist enjoying a Buffett performance.
Buffett is schedule to perform an acoustic set at an Oct. 29 Get Out the Vote rally in support of Gwen Graham’s congressional campaign. The rally will be held at The Moon, a Tallahassee night club which seats 900. Tuesday the Graham campaign planned to distribute about 900 tickets at four campaign offices in Leon, Bay and Jackson counties.
