Herb Polson says goodbye to City Council

At his last meeting as a member of the St. Petersburg City Council, Herb Polson stood with a key to the city as fellow council members praised his character, institutional knowledge and his steadiness.

When it was time for him to thank his fellow council members, his family and the city, Polson could hardly hold back the tears.

“I’ve been waiting for this one,” Polson said as he pulled a letter to read from his jacket. “I will surely miss it and the people I’ve worked with. The journey to retirement is often better than the destination.”

After 35 years of being employed by the city of St. Petersburg, Polson decided to not run for the 2011 reelection. Polson will now be teaching part-time at St. Petersburg College.

“Herb is the most level-headed, unflappable member of city council,” said council member Karl Nurse. “Your job is to leave the place better than you’ve found it, and you’ve done that.”

Polson is leaving the council after one term. Filling Polson’s District 1 seat is Charlie Gerdes.
