I hope I see Brian Hughes so I can buy him a drink

I am traveling to Tallahassee today with a packed agenda for the next forty-eight hours. But here’s hoping I run into Brian Hughes tonight. I’d like to buy him a drink.

Hughes was the chief adviser to Lizbeth Benacquisto’s congressional campaign. As is well known by now, Senator Benacquisto lost to Curt Clawson in the GOP primary. That sucks in general and for Hughes in particular.

But Hughes is still a pro’s pro in the political communications arena. Hughes is still a senior adviser to Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater and Speaker Designate Steve Crisafulli, as well as Benacquisto, who will remain a formidable force in Florida politics.

Hughes, and his partner in crime, Brian Burgess, still have a slew of private clients, too.

Like any politico who suffers a tough loss, the thing to remember is that consultants are a lot like baseball players — all they have to do is bat .300 and they’ll make the All-Star game.

Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to remind Hughes of that when I buy him a drink.
