Janet Long pre-qualifies for Pinellas County commission race

Janet LongJanet Long has pre-qualified in her quest for a second term on the Pinellas County Commission.

To pre-qualify, Long wrote a check for $5,653.20.

Long, a Democrat, is seeking re-election to the District 1 at-large commission seat, which is elected countywide. Republican Martin Hughes, a Republican, has announced he will run against her.

Long was elected to the commission in 2012. Before that, she served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2006 to 2010. She was a Seminole City Council member from 2002 to 2006 and was the deputy insurance commissioner for the Florida Department of Insurance from 1986 to 1998.

Long is currently serving on the Pinellas County charter review commission, the Health and Human Services Leadership Board, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority and the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council.

She is married, has one daughter, two sons and four grandchildren.

District 1 covers Seminole, portions of north Pinellas including East Lake and some beach communities.
