Jimmy Buffett will headline an Everglades Coalition rally Tuesday at the Old Capitol. Buffett’s performance will highlight a noon rally for the third annual Everglades Day of Action.
The coalition has been promoting the event as an opportunity to lobby lawmakers. It has sent out “Buy the Land! Send Water South! Save our Everglades & Estuaries!” flyers as a call to action for people to be in Tallahassee Tuesday.
The coalition wants to talk to lawmakers about Amendment 1 money. The state has an option until October to buy 46,000 acres of U.S. Sugar land. The coalition says the land can be used as part of Everglades restoration and Amendment 1 provides the money to do it now.
Buffett will perform a set of songs Tuesday at the noon rally. Coral Reefer Band members guitarist Mac McAnally and Robert Greenidge on steel drums will join Buffett for the performance.
Carl Hiassen, author and Miami Herald columnist, is expected to speak at the rally.
For Buffett, it’s the second time in the last six months the singer/author/all-around Florida icon, has lent his voice to a political event in Tallahassee. In October, he headlined a get-out-the-vote rally for U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham’s congressional campaign.
