Lightning beats Columbus on shorthanded goal by Brian Boyle

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It isn’t his scoring touch that keeps Brian Boyle in the NHL.

At least, not until lately.

Boyle knocked in the winning goal with 6:13 gone in the third period.ย Alex Killorn took the puck away and turned it into a breakaway on the left side of the net, then passed across to Boyle. It was Boyle’s eighth goal of the year, not bad for a player who has only 23 goals combined in the last three seasons.

Jonathan Marchessault also scored for Tampa Bay.

Goaltender Ben Bishop stopped 25 of 26 shots, but got a break in the final period when the puck stopped on the line (it has to be completely beyond it) with 2:17 left to play. Teammate Vladislav Namestnikov shoved the puck pack under Bishop.

It was the first time the Bolts had played against former coach John Tortorella since Torts joined Columbus.

The Lightning now plays at Toronto, where the pressure will be on captain Steven Stamkos. Stamkos is from Toronto, and with his contract up, there is much speculation locally that he could join the team in the off-season.
