Mitt Romney: Drug testing laws like Rick Scott’s are ‘an excellent idea’

in Uncategorized by

A bill for drug testing welfare recipients has recently been on the table in Georgia, and at a campaign stop in Atlanta Mitt Romney told the NBC affiliate 11Alive that it’s an “excellent idea.”

“States will deal with drug testing with welfare recipients, but my own view it’s a great idea,” he said. “People who are receiving welfare benefits, government benefits, we should make sure they are not using the money for drugs. I think it’s an excellent idea.”

Florida’s controversial law requiring people receiving welfare to take drug tests has made Gov. Rick Scott a target for criticism and ridicule, most memorably when a “Daily Show” correspondent asked him to pee in a cup.

Scott did not endorse a GOP candidate ahead of the Florida primary, and a Public Policy Polling report showed that voters would have been less likely to vote for a candidate he endorsed. He did say that Latinos are drawn to Romney because of his family values.
