Noles rise, Gators slip in AP Top 25 poll; Buckeyes still on top

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Buoyed by an impressive 41-21 win over Louisville, the Florida State Seminoles returned to the top 10 in the AP Top 25 college football poll. After slippage in recent weeks despite winning, the Seminoles rose 2 spots to No. 9.

After a highly competitive 35-28 loss to LSU, the Florida Gators were one of two SEC teams to drop from the top 10. The Gators’ strong effort on the road with a new quarterback against a top 10 team was not enough to prevent losing 5 spots. Florida is now ranked No. 13, while LSU moved up to No. 5.

Texas A&M dropped 6 spots to No. 15 after a 41-23 home loss to Alabama. Despite their impressive road victory, Alabama moved up only two spots to No. 8. LSU is now ranked No. 5. The other SEC ranked team is Ole Miss, who dropped to No. 24.

Clemson fell one position to number 6 despite an impressive offensive performance against Boston College. The other ACC teams in the rankings are the Duke Blue Devils at 23 and Pittsburgh in the number 25 position.

Ohio State remained at the top of the poll after a 38-10 rout of Penn State. Baylor remained at No. 2 while Utah and TCU swapped positions with the Utes climbing to third.

Voters continue to look for alternatives to the Buckeyes at the top. They earn a plurality of first place votes with 28, but the other 33 votes are split among 5 other teams. Baylor earned 12 first place votes, Utah had 16, TCU had 3 with LSU and Clemson earning one each.

The biggest mover is the Memphis Tigers, who leaped 9 spots from No. 27 to No. 18 after their big 37-24 victory over Ole Miss. Iowa and Stanford climbed 5 spots each after wins over top 25 teams.

A question on the minds of many was what would happen to Michigan and Michigan State after the epic ending of their game on Saturday that resulted in a Michigan State win on the final play of the game. Michigan fell 3 spots to No. 15 while Michigan State held their hold on their number 7 ranking.
