Postcards from South Carolina: Next president needs to have “heart for people,” Jeb Bush says

The next person who will sit behind the desk in the Oval Office needs to have a heart for people, says Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.

Speaking to a South Carolina audience at the Faith and Family Presidential Forum in Greenville last week, Bush said eight years as Florida’s governor gave him the perspective and character necessary to lead the nation.

“My backbone was solid, my heart was big, I had a brain to solve the problems,” he said. “And I never abdicated my responsibility. Whenever there was a problem, I didn’t say ‘my dog ate my homework.’ ”

Whether it was eight hurricanes and four tropical storms and 16 months, with $150 billion in damages, Bush said he never blamed the federal government.

“You never heard me blame anything,” he said. “And the state was better off in that type of principled leadership.”

Bush added that the country “desperately needs a president that has [that] same heart for people.”
