Rays’ Kiermaier adds another defensive gem in win

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Kevin Kiermaier isn’t going to let the baseball season end without offering a few more highlights.

Kiermaier made another amazing catch in a season that has featured a greatest hits collection of them. On Wednesday night, Kiermaier started back on a drive hit by Derek Dietrich, turned and slammed into the fence as he caught the ball. Going into the game, Kiermaier had 37 defensive runs saved, 15 more than Toronto’s Kevin Pillar, who was second with 22. His Wins Above Replacement was 6.8, which was fourth in the AL.

It was one of the highlights of the Rays’ 6-4 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Tampa Bay won its second straight off the Marlins as Grady Sizemore had a two-out, three-run double for the Rays. Nick Franklin hit a home run.

Pitcher Drew Smyly won his fifth straight decision for the Rays. The Rays had a 6-2 lead before the Marlins made the final score closer.

Brad Boxberger recorded his 40th save of the season for the Rays.

It was the 77th win of the season for the Rays, matching their total from 2014.

Jake Odorizzi pitches tonight for Tampa Bay.
