The Tampa Bay Rays are not big fans of working overtime.
The Rays’ record in extra innings fell to 2-9 Tuesday night when Houston’s Marwin Gonzalez hit a home run on a full count in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Astros to a 3-2 victory. It was Boxberger’s fourth loss since July 22 and his ninth of the season, a record for a Rays’ reliever.
Tampa Bay held a 2-1 into the eighth on Curt Casali’s ninth home run and a botched double-play ball off the bat of Evan Longoria. But the Astros tied the game in the eighth off of reliever Jake McGee with three straight hits. Tampa Bay got out of the eighth only on a double-play grounder.
For Gonzalez, it was his third hit of the night and his second RBI.
The Rays were 0-for-eight with runners in scoring position.
On June 20, the Rays had the best record in the major leagues on the road at 20-11. Since then, however, they are 7-18. The Rays are 1-4 on this road trip.
Nathan Karns pitches for the Rays today against Houston’s Dallas Keuchel, who is seeking his 15th win.
