Rays lose game to Toronto’s Josh Donaldson in bottom of ninth

It’s hardly news, but it is now official. The Tampa Bay Rays will not finish with a winning record this season.

The Rays lost their 81st game Sunday, to go with only 75 wins, in losing a lead and a game to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Rays led by as much as 4-1 before the Blue Jays came back, winning the game on the 41st home run of the year by Josh Donaldson in the bottom of the ninth.

It was the Rays’ 34th comeback victory of the year. Justin Smoak’s two-run homer brought the Blue Jays close, and Kevin Pillar’s double in the eighth tied things.

Mikie Mahtook had a single and home run for the Rays.

Tampa Bay is off today, then plays the Marlins. Matt Moore will pitch for Tampa Bay.
