Rays’ Matt Moore has another good outing in beating Red Sox

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Some pitchers are after victories. Some are after strikeouts.

Matt Moore? Well, he’s after…trying to be Matt Moore again.

Moore pitched his second straight strong game Tuesday night, beating the Boston Red Sox 5-2 and lifting the Tampa Bay Rays out of last place for at least a night. Moore surrendered two runs in the first, but no more in his 6 2/3 innings. Moore has shaved almost two runs off his ERA in his last two victories.

It was the kind of victory that is sure to buy Moore a chance to be a member of this rotation next season, something that seemed beyond reach after he went eight straight games without getting further than the fifth inning.

Brad Boxberger recorded his 36th save of the season for the Rays.

For Tampa Bay, the big hit was a two-run homer by Mikie Mahtook in the eighth that padded the lead.

Tonight, Drew Smyly pitches for the Rays against Boston’s Rick Porcello.
