Rays win spring game behind power of Mikie Mahtook, Richie Shaffer

in Sports by

The future went deep for the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday.

Both Richie Shaffer and Mikie Mahtook, late season call-ups last year, homered in the Rays’ 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite their successes, it figures to be tough for either to make the team with the additions of Corey Dickerson, Steve Pearce and Logan Morrison plus the return of Desmond Jennings.

The Rays beat the Phillies behind another good effort by Matt Moore, who struck out eight in his 4.2 innings. Logan Forsythe and Pearce also homered for the Rays, who improved their spring training record to 7-9 on the season.

Nick Franklin had two hits for Tampa Bay.

The Rays are home against the Red Sox today.
