Frederica Wilson endorses Patrick Murphy for U.S. Senate

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson is endorsing her congressional colleague Patrick Murphy for the U.S. Senate in 2016.

Wilson, a Miami progressive Democrat, represents Florida’s 24th Congressional District.

Earlier in the day, progressive Democrats asked U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, a grassroots favorite from Orlando, to enter the primary against Murphy. They fear that Murphy, a former Republican, is simply too moderate.

“This gentleman will make a fine senator,” Wilson said in a statement. “Since arriving in Congress, Patrick has distinguished himself as a leader who will work across the aisle to improve the lives of Floridians. He has championed legislation that will create jobs, protect our most vulnerable, and support working families.”

“Today, I join the chorus of Democratic voices endorsing Congressman Patrick Murphy as the next United States senator. … I hope that you will join me in supporting Patrick to be our next U.S. senator from Florida.”

Murphy also has endorsements from fellow Florida U.S. Reps. Alcee Hastings, Ted Deutch and Lois Frankel, as well as former Gov. Charlie Crist.
