Rep. Will Weatherford: Maps not aimed at Allen West

Amid rumors that the Legislature was looking to push Republican Congressman Allen West out of his district under new maps, the chairman of the House Redistricting Committee took to social media to swat the idea away, reports the News Service of Florida. “This is patently false,” Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, said in a statement on his Facebook page. “I personally have supported and endorsed Allen West. … However, my personal support cannot and will not trump the Constitution.” West’s new district would become substantially more Democratic under the redistricting plans being floated, prompting fears he would either be defeated in the new district or move in and challenge another incumbent. But Weatherford noted that media reports say 38 state legislators would also be drawn out of their districts under the current plans, and that the House was required to follow the anti-gerrymandering Fair Districts standards approved by voters last year. The Florida House is expected to vote on the redistricting proposals Friday.
