Rory McIlroy’s dad’s $683 bet on British Open nets $342,000 payday

In 2004 (when Rory McIlroy was 15 years old) his dad (and three friends) bet $683 (converted from British Pounds) that McIlroy would win the British Open BEFORE he turned 26 years old.

With McIlroy’s victory Sunday, this longshot bet will win $342,000!

McIlroy is currently 25, meaning that this year’s British Open was his last chance to win the bet. There has been some ambiguity in the media as to whether this year’s victory would count under the terms of the bet – but the BBC’s Andrew Cotter confirmed directly from McIlroy that it would.

What a story! The faith of a father plus a monster cash win.
