South Florida names sophomore Quinton Flowers to be its quarterback

in Sports by

Sophomore Quinton Flowers barely made it onto the field in his first season with the South Florida Bulls.

This year, he will lead them.

Flowers was named as the team’s starting quarterback Monday by head coach Willie Taggert. He will lead the Bulls in their first game against Florida A&M on Sept. 5 after beating out senior Stephen Bench.

Flowers played only sporadicly in his first season with the Bulls, hitting eight of 20 passes for 111 yards and rushing 13 times for 73 yards with one start.

Flowers, a four-star recruit from Miami who was a three-time MVP for Miami Jackson, will lead the faster-paced South Florida offense. In his final high school season, he threw for 1,349 yards and ran for 641 yards. He was offered scholarships by Alabama and Auburn, but only if he would move to wide receiver.

Bench was the more experienced of the two quarterbacks, having played in 15 games with three starts and throwing for five touchdowns and five interceptions.
