An elderly, possibly homeless man was struck and killed as he crossed West Columbus Drive on Friday night, Tampa police say.
According to a report, the man was crossing in the middle of the 2900 block about 8:30 p.m. when he stepped in front of a 2006 Ford Escape driven by Christopher Cano, 26. Cano was unable to stop in time.
The man was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he died. He had no identification on him, and investigators are still trying to determine his identity.
No charges have been filed. The case remains under investigation, police said.
Cano, a Democrat, is currently a candidate for Florida House District 60.
