RNC Chairman Michael Steele says it’ll be ‘the people’s convention’ in Tampa

in Statewide by

From Preston Rudie: Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele visited Tampa Thursday for the first time since the city was selected to host the 2012 Republican National Convention. He said the 2012 event will be billed as “the people’s convention” and will feature a convention village while relying heavily on local businesses. “We have a commitment to use and elevate and to support local grown, home grown talent,” Steele said. 5 things I think I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

I missed yesterday, so today is a bit of a blend of commentary on the last two day’s editions. The biggest news, although it’s not surprising, concerns the Times itself: Neil Brown being named Executive Editor.  I just love the way this story was handled by the Times, as if, ho-hum, we’re just naming another staff position, there’s nothing to see here.  In a town this size (thank you John Prine), and in a community as heavily influenced by the…

Troxler’s back and, man, did I miss him.  For most of his column, Trox lays the wood to Bill McCollum, but he also takes time to criticize Kendrick Meek and the scandal engulfing his campaign: When it comes to Rentboy.com vs. a Cadillac Escalade, I’m goin’ with Rentboy as the lead story — and yet, who cannot admire the stink surrounding U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, the leading Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate? Of course, the scandal is its own…

City Councilman Jeff Danner wants to know the difference between an ‘adult use’ venue and a ‘bikini bar’

in Peter/Statewide by

It’s a question that has perplexed me for years: what is the difference between an “adult use” venue and a “bikini bar”? Try as I may to determine the difference — and I have invested considerable time and money into determining the difference between an “”adult use” venue and a “bikini bar” — I am hard pressed to explain the differences. Fortunately, St. Petersburg City Councilman Jeff Danner is determined to get to the bottom of this vexing issue.  Today,…
