Elizabeth Warren proposes truce with Donald Trump

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Latest on the U.S. election: 3:25 p.m. — Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is proposing that she and President-elect Donald Trump “put aside our differences” and work together to rebuild the American economy for working people. A favorite of liberals, Warren has waged bitter wars of words with Trump. She’s called him a “pathetic coward” and worse on Twitter. He’s nicknamed her “Pocahontas” — a reference to claims she made about being part Native American. As recently as Monday, Trump…

A new report released Thursday by Florida CHAIN contends the Affordable Care Act has helped increase the ranks of Florida children with health care coverage by 36 percent since 2013. The report, by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families, declares the percentage of children nationally who have health insurance is now at 95.2 percent, an all-time high. The situation is not quite as strong in Florida, but the Sunshine State’s jump of 36 percent over pre-ACA days is among the…

The number of Floridians with health insurance has grown by nearly 760,000 since the Affordable Care Act took effect, in part reflecting an increase of nearly 113 percent in the individual coverage market. The number of uninsured in Florida declined from 3.9 million at the end of 2013 to 3.2 million at the end of 2014, according to U.S. Census Bureau data cited in a report approved Wednesday by the Florida Health Insurance Advisory Board. Depending on how much the family earns, the dependents might not qualify for Affordable Care Act premium subsidies. “They can go to the marketplace, but without the subsidy,”…

in Statewide by

No doubt there is bad blood between the Rick Scott and Barack Obama administrations. It could be a reason why the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has rejected Scott’s request for federal assistance for a multitude of bad weather events — as well as requests for federal funds for handling the Zika virus and the Pulse nightclub shooting — over the past year. But in a letter directed to the President on Tuesday, the governor lays out the case that it’s beyond…

Florida Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier won’t commit to an answer on Obamacare being a long-term solution to the Sunshine State’s health insurance needs. When asked Tuesday whether the insurance regime set up by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) could be salvaged, Altmaier said “that will take a little bit more conversation; I don’t know that I’m ready to say one way or the other.” The commissioner spoke with reporters after his appearance at a Florida Cabinet meeting. Earlier this month, the Office…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.18.16 – The Affordable Care Act is getting less affordable

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s more news about the Affordable Care Act this week, and it ain’t that good. Aetna announced on Tuesday it would be pulling out of Florida and 10 other states next year, giving those on the government plan less options for choice here in the Sunshine State. There have always been problems with the ACA, and they’re starting to exacerbate. But the answer isn’t just to repeal it, like most congressional Republicans have invoked like a mantra for the past…
