in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Eleven years to the day after the Hillsborough County Commission stunningly voted to ban all “gay pride” events, that same government body on Wednesday approved hanging the rainbow gay pride flag from the top of County Center for the rest of the month, in a tribute to those who were massacred at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday morning. The measure was one of three that was related to  Orlando tragedy by Commissioner Kevin Beckner. The board approved a separate motion to hold a hearing next…

Joe Henderson: Why not give voters say on Hillsborough County transportation tax?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

So, the Hillsborough County Commission decided, again, to take an important decision out of the hands of those most affected. The public is once again denied the chance to decide if wants to tax itself to pay for things like roads, buses and other transportation necessities. Undeterred by traffic jams and studies showing a quarter-million more people will move to Hillsborough real soon, commissioners Thursday voted 4-3 not to proceed with a November referendum for a 20-year sales tax hike…

The measure failed on a 4-3 vote. Commissioners Victor Crist, Al Higginbotham, Stacy White and Sandy Murman each voted to oppose the measure. The board did vote 4-3 on a proposal only introduced Wednesday…

The board voted 4-1 to suspend talks with the two companies until the 2nd DCA in Lakeland decides on whether the PTC had the right to issue citations to ride-sharing companies. A hearing is set for June 22, but a ruling on that decision could take months to decide. A month…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

So, Go Hillsborough is somehow still alive? Though they haven’t set a date yet, apparently there will be another public hearing on putting a sales tax referendum on the ballot this November. On Wednesday, voted to support a half-cent sales tax for 15 years, and not the 30-year plan that was shot down two weeks ago. As the Tampa Bay Times reports this morning, the BOCC methodically went through a series of votes on potential revenue sources to pay for…

Hillsborough County Commissioners dismiss call for affordable housing trust fund

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A proposal advocated for by the Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality – HOPE – to have the Hillsborough County government establish a $10 million affordable housing trust fund, fell by the wayside on Wednesday. Commissioner Victor Crist won praise from his colleagues for bringing the issue up for discussion, but they politely rejected the concept for the moment, saying that they still have yet to address other important issues that would require funding, such as transportation. “This is a community problem, and it begs…
