Court spokesman Craig Waters provided an updated list of 20 applicants Tuesday. Blackjack trial comes to close as judge questions state’s case

in Top Headlines by

A federal judge shellacked an attorney for the state of Florida during closing arguments Friday in a trial over whether the Seminole Tribe gets to continue offering blackjack to its casino customers. U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle peppered the state’s counsel with questions about whether gambling regulators basically allowed the state’s non-tribal cardrooms to offer games that broke the exclusive rights to blackjack promised to the Seminoles in 2010. At issue was a 2011 administrative rule allowing what’s now known as “designated player games.” The tribe says…

Jose Felix Diaz, the Miami Republican who shepherded the bills through the process this year. Diaz spoke after the House’s floor session. After a deep breath, he added, “…but that’s the word around town.” Diaz said he talked to his counterpart, state Sen. Rob…

Effort to appease pari-mutuels is killing Seminole Compact

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If the Seminole Compact and related legislation don’t pass this session, lawmakers will have no one to blame but themselves, the tribe’s Tallahassee-based attorney said Tuesday. Barry Richard, who represents the Seminole Tribe of Florida, blamed the apparent Tuesday morning collapse of the 2016 gambling bills on lawmakers bending over backward to appease the state’s dog and horse racing concerns. “The issue hanging us up is what happens to the pari-mutuels,” he told FloridaPolitics.com in a phone interview. State Sen. Tom Lee,…

2016 Legislative Food Fights: Seminole Compact faces skeptical Legislature

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The back-and-forth and backroom dealing is over, and lawmakers soon will publicly comb through the new blackjack deal between the state and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The 63-page document revived the old joke around the Capitol: It contains something for everyone … to hate. And that means the tribe’s lobbyists will be working double-time to get some version of it through The Process.  Last year’s lobby team kept a relatively low profile: Emily Buckley, Gus Corbella, Hayden and Angela Dempsey, Fred Dickinson, Charles…
