Is a Miami Beach physician with shady legal history the best United for Care can do?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

On the day United for Care released its first ad of the 2016 cycle, No on 2 spent most of the morning directing sarcastic tweets at the group and its campaign manager, Ben Pollara. Basically, No on 2 was all bent out of shape over an advertisement that featured United for Care’s deputy campaign manager masquerading as an M.D. Of course, it’s no major scandal for a political campaign to cut ad production costs by using staff members instead of…

New anti-pot video claims Amendment 2 allows ‘5,000’ marijuana shops in Florida

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If Florida passes a constitutional amendment in November to legalize medical marijuana, opponents of the measure say the Sunshine State could soon be swamped with more pot shops than McDonald’s, 7-Eleven and Starbucks combined. That’s the message from a new video — titled “5,000” — produced by the Vote No on 2 campaign, which claims that if Amendment 2 passes, the door could open for as many as 5,000 marijuana dispensaries across the state. The group says the video is…

Today on Context Florida: Florida’s Democratic bench, Andrew Jackson, felon voting rights and back in the day

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: Ben Pollara breaks down the deep bench of Florida Democrats for 2018, starting with Gwen Graham’s recent semi-surprise, twofer announcement has the Florida chattering classes (temporarily) taking their attention away from 2016 and toward a post-Rick Scott state Capitol. Diane Roberts says that moving Andrew Jackson to the back of the $20 bill was a “no-brainer.” But Planet Fox (that lightless but loud satellite orbiting the vast Murdoch Spatial Anomaly) is puffing and squawking, Roberts adds. Greta…

The Drug-Free Florida Committee, a political action committee associated with St. Petersburg Republican financier and business executive Mel Sembler, will begin raising money shortly with hopes to do battle again with Orlando trial lawyer John Morgan‘s United For Care. Sembler told the Tampa Bay Times that he was shooting for $10 million this year, which…

Today on Context Florida: The Republican problem, Rick Scott & the environment, unfairness in politics and Key West parking

in Apolitical by

Today on Context Florida: As a preacher’s kid who grew up in the South, Jac VerSteeg values politeness. It is a given that, when you encounter a governor in a coffee shop, you do not yell, “You are an a**hole!” Nevertheless, Cara Jennings’ crude outburst in a Gainesville Starbucks provides an insight that if taken to heart might benefit the Republican Party, whose presidential frontrunners are Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. The party has an a**hole problem. Diane Roberts asks if…

Today on Context Florida: I’ve got a (political) secret, Donald Trump & Paul Ryan, Pam Bondi and Kansas

in Apolitical by

Today on Context Florida: Thanks to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, Martin Dyckman says the campaign for president has become in part a bizarre version of the old celebrity game show, “I’ve Got a Secret.” This time, however, we know what secrets are being kept. We just don’t know the details, or what devils may be in them. Clinton’s are the transcripts of those pricey Wall Street speeches. But that’s petty stuff compared to what may be in Trump’s income tax…
