John Morgan expects more allies, fewer opponents in 2nd pot amendment try

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Now that they’re back on the ballot, Florida’s champions of medical marijuana expressed confidence Thursday that they have learned enough from their 2-point 2014 election defeat to win this November. On Wednesday United For Care received news it had successfully gathered more than 693,000 valid signatures and topped thresholds in 14 of Florida’s 27 congressional districts. That means their proposed Florida Constitution amendment to legalize medical marijuana will be back on the ballot, in November. The group’s chairman, Florida lawyer John Morgan,…

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: As Jeb Bush struggles to stay above the margin of error national polls, Peter Schorsch — a Bush supporter — might be in the market for a new candidate. Ben Pollara: Why I support Jeff Brandes for Florida Senate

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

I’ve been a member of the Florida Democratic Party since I first registered to vote at 18. My donation wasn’t…

Ben Pollara: Draft the Pope, my wild ride

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Steve Schale’s recent Context Florida piece on his whirlwind experience with the Draft Biden movement inspired me to write my own, similar piece. This is obviously satire, and I expect my colleague Steve to take it with his usual good sense of humor. – Ben  For me, it started when I first saw the plumes of white smoke rise from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. I’m not a religious guy, but I come from Italian Catholic stock and so…

State panel: Medical pot can be taxed

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If Florida ever approves medical marijuana for sale in the state, expect to pay tax on it. Medical pot is “tangible personal property” that is “subject to sales and use tax,” a state economics panel has found. “Annual state and local government sales tax revenues could increase by an estimated $67 million after taking into account lawful consumption of medical marijuana,” according to a summary of its report posted online this week.
