Wengay Newton will ask City Council to hold special election for new St. Pete Pier

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council member Wengay Newton has long been a proponent of saving the city’s iconic inverted pyramid. He was a vocal critic of the Lens and supported former mayoral candidate Kathleen Ford’s petition effort to save the current Pier as well as the successful petition drive by Concerned Citizens that led to the ultimate undoing of the Lens. Now he’s supporting the only design out of the Pier Selection Committee’s top three picks that reuses and renovates the…

Ed Montanari campaign kick-off mirrors strong early support

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Supporters of Ed Montanari flooded into 400 Beach Seafood in downtown St. Pete Tuesday evening for the City Council candidate’s campaign kick-off event. At least 75 people, including business leaders and owners, nonprofit heads and former elected officials, snacked on seafood spread and various hors-d’oeuvres in what was a melting pot of personalities. The showing was representative of Montanari’s initial support for his District 3 City Council bid. Even before his first campaign event where Democrats rubbed elbows with prominent…

Bliss condo proposal clears another City Council hurdle

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Developers for the proposed 19-story condo in downtown St. Pete are celebrating another win. City Council voted Thursday to uphold its decision to approve a building plan for the high-end condos known as Bliss. A resident of Parkshore condominiums located behind where the new tower would be erected challenged the building plan, arguing the public was not notified of the hearing. The building plan had already been approved by City Council, but the developers were making a change by moving an…

Contrary to Times editorial, Steve Kornell shouldn’t be ousted

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times published an editorial Wednesday calling for the heads of five City Council members who voted against Mayor Rick Kriseman’s original deal brokered with the Tampa Bay Rays to allow them to look outside of St. Pete for potential stadium sites. The editorial, to put it mildly, was brutal. The Times’ editorial board called Wengay Newton and Bill Dudley lacking in leadership. It said Amy Foster ran for her seat based on business acumen, but has yet to show…

With rumors of Kathleen Ford pondering a run, speculation begins about next year’s City Council races

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

One of my governing theories of politics is, because of the down economy, more and more people will consider running for elected office.  Not because these people all hope to improve the state of government, but because elected office provides economic security, specifically, retirement benefits, in an era when such things are hard to obtain.  I think you’ll see more races like the St. Petersburg Mayoral Campaign and the upcoming Tampa Mayoral Campaign, campaigns in which several candidates run creating…

5 things I think I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

There’s so much news to discuss, but today, there is really only one story the Times cares about. I cannot tell you how upset — internally and externally — the St. Petersburg Times‘ corporate officers are about the City of St. Petersburg’s solicitation ban. I spoke with Times’ lawyer the compassionate and uber-smart George Rahdert last year during the city elections and he was aghast at some of the city leaders’ decision to ‘go after the least among us’ meaning…
