5 things I think I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

There’s so much news to discuss, but today, there is really only one story the Times cares about. I cannot tell you how upset — internally and externally — the St. Petersburg Times‘ corporate officers are about the City of St. Petersburg’s solicitation ban. I spoke with Times’ lawyer the compassionate and uber-smart George Rahdert last year during the city elections and he was aghast at some of the city leaders’ decision to ‘go after the least among us’ meaning…

The Broken Windows of 38th Avenue and First Street North

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Campaigning for mayor of St. Petersburg, Bill Foster’s first promise was that he would “adopt a ‘broken windows’ philosophy when it came to crime prevention, which according to Foster’s campaign website, means stopping minor offenses in order to prevent major crimes. The “broken windows” theory stems from an article titled “Broken Windows” by James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling, which appeared in the March 1982 edition of The Atlantic Monthly: Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not…

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

This week will mark the end of Bill Foster’s first 100 days as Mayor of St. Petersburg.  Here’s what I think of Mayor Foster’s first three months in office: 1.  So let me get this straight, Foster’s first three major personnel decisions have been to retain Goliath Davis, to eliminate five Park Ranger positions at Boyd Hill Nature Trail and to hire his former campaign manager for a $50,000 a year position. 2.  Foster is said to have narrowed the list…

St. Pete officials approve red light cameras

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The City Council voted 7-1 today to install cameras at intersections to fine motorists who don’t stop at red lights, hearing little opposition from the public and citing few specific studies that showed this was an effective way to reduce crashes. “The research is very simple,” said Council member Bill Dudley. “Sit in your car and watch. There’s so much data out there that says it’s not a good thing. Running red lights is a form of disaster.” Council member…
