Where you at, Dan Ruth?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Daniel Ruth was/is a great columnist. I still don’t understand why the Tampa Tribune let him go. I have to believe his dismissal had more to do with the Trib, than with Ruth. So it was welcome news when the St. Petersburg Times announced that it was poaching Ruth from the Tribune/unemployment line. Ruth’s once-a-week column is often funny, occasionally hilarious and always insightful. Daniel Ruth is a terrible blogger. I don’t know why he doesn’t pull down his all…

Live-blogging, tweeting of Pinellas GOP’s straw ballot showdown between Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Life has its little ironies. For me, one of them is the fact that I get along much better with my old Republican friends than I do with my new Democratic colleagues. I’d much rather have a drink with Tony DiMatteo than Ramsey McLaughlan. Maybe that’s why I’ve enjoyed going to the Pinellas Republican Executive Committee meetings (do the Pinellas Democrats even have meetings?) I’ll be at January’s meeting of the PCREC to blog and tweet about the straw ballot…

Mucho gracias: more than 20,000 readers visit Saint Petersblog on Saturday for coverage of Glenn Beck’s tour of Florida

in Peter/Statewide by

First, let me say this: there are many, many blogs and websites that are important than mine and receive much more traffic that Saint Petersblog. But this blog has come a long way in one year. Last November, I could count the number of unique daily visitors on my hands and toes. Over the course of the year, as the St. Petersburg Municipal Elections heated-up, the number of visitors to Saint Petersblog increased day by day, building to a crescendo…

My 1,000th post: I will be Live Tweeting from Glenn Beck’s book signing in Tampa and his rally where he will reveal “The Plan”

in Peter/Statewide by

First of all, thank you for making this blog so worthwhile that, with this one, I will have written 1,000 posts worth of opinions, apologies, endorsements, gotchas, links, predictions, pleas for mercy, rants, screeds, etc., etc. They say the first 1,000 is always the hardest to write, just as the first million is always the most difficult to earn. So, hopefully, the next 1,000 will come sooner — and easier — than the first. Regardless, I really am grateful for…

Bob Graham’s blog lies dormant

in Statewide by

Few new blogs received as much attention as former Senator Bob Graham’s foray into the new media. Jokingly hailed as the father of Twitter because of his obsessive notetaking, Senator Graham should have taken to the blogosphere like a duck to water. Unfortunately, it looks as if Graham is just one of millions of people who launch a blog, only to let it lie dormant not soon after its launch. Graham’s blog, Spiral Notebook, has not been updated since its inception…

Red State blog: What Charlie Crist hath wrought on America

in Statewide by

From Red State: Behold Florida’s new Senator. He is Charlie Crist’s errand boy. George LeMieux is undecided on government run healthcare and he supports Barack Obama’s stimulus plan. He has taken his first act as a Senator: he blocked a plan to allow drilling off the Florida coast. Charlie Crist’s errand boy continues doing Charlie’s errands. Do we want LeMieux’s keeper in the Senate? Heck no. Support (Marco) Rubio.

For your consideration: Saint Petersblog 2.0 for Best of the Bay’s Best Local Blog

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

VOTE HERE FOR SAINT PETERSBLOG FOR BEST LOCAL BLOG. As a candidate for Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay’s Best Local Troublemaker award, I forgot to think about how Tampa-dominated these awards can be. How else can you explain Joe Redner leading in this category. Five, ten years ago, sure. But what did Redner do this year to deserve this recognition? Almost everyone else on the Readers’ Poll for Best Local Troublemaker makes their trouble in Tampa. What basically has…
