Despite community outcry, Tampa Bay Times columnist Ernest Hooper defends Bob Buckhorn

Following the May 31 shooting death of 14-year-old Edward Harris, I wrote about Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s statement following the tragedy. “These young people, if they want to end up a statistic, either incarcerated or dead, the choice is theirs,” Buckhorn told the Times.  “Either get out of the life and find good role models, or you end up in the street in a pool of blood at age 14. That’s the reality.” The statement came across as cold and out…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.11.15 — Picking winners and losers in Tallahassee

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times’ lead today is a story that we touched upon briefly yesterday as the Legislature is now half-way through its special session in Tallahassee — that being the very real fears among movers and shakers in Tampa that state funding for a USF College of Medicine building ($17 million) and accompanying USF Heart Institute ($15.75 million) is in peril. There is a dispute about whether the projects should be bonded, since legislators say there’s not enough funding to pay for the projects…

Online petition calls for Bob Buckhorn to publicly apologize for Edward Harris shooting comment

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Community activists are calling on Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn to apologize to the family of a 14-year-old who was gunned down late last month for inappropriate comments he made immediately following the shooting. Edward Harris was fatally shot in Woodland Terrace Park by an unknown shooter in a passing vehicle. Harris was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died from his injury. Buckhorn responded to the neighborhood to speak with residents in the community. While there, he spoke with…

Lesson in logic: Bob Buckhorn’s Chicago smack talk is OK because it’s not as bad as Hulk Hogan’s

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn doesn’t know “smack talking” like Hulk Hogan, apparently. In a Facebook post Wednesday morning Buckhorn shared a Tampa Bay Times article about Hulk Hogan’s verbal and social media rivalry with Chicago wrestler CM Punk over the Lightning showdown with the Blackhawks. “Now this is some smack talking,” Buckhorn wrote. “Careful though some bloggers may actually think they are serious.” Buckhorn is likely referring either to me or Creative Loafing’s Kate Bradshaw or both. Bradshaw first called…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.10.15 — Game changing developments?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The big news locally this morning is Mike Salinero’s exclusive in the Tampa Tribune that Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill is prepared to recommend to the Board of County Commissioners and Mayor Bob Buckhorn tomorrow that a half-cent sales transit tax be put on the ballot in 2016, with 60 percent of those funds collected going to roads and bridges, and only 30 percent for mass transit. We’ll undoubtedly follow up, and we’ll all get the official details tomorrow. But I can…

A few words on political ‘handlers’

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Twice in about a week I’ve reported on Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s “foot-in-mouth problem.” In the latest blog, I cited four times over approximately six months where Buckhorn’s choice of words have been called into question by some people. While some comments, like the one where he basically blamed a 14-year-old who was gunned down in broad daylight for his own shooting, were more egregious than others. They all led me to the same conclusion – Buckhorn’s brain-to-mouth filter seems to…

Bob Buckhorn’s foot-in-mouth problem

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Chicagoans don’t like Tampa very much right now. And that’s not just because their beloved Blackhawks got bested by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Saturday’s Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals. It’s because they can’t buy tickets to playoff games at Amalie Arena. Owners have a controversial policy that includes not selling tickets to people with out-of-state addresses. In an interview about the policy prior to Game 2, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn likely made it worse. “We didn’t want…
