New legislation signed by Gov. Scott could help Hillsborough County with a transit tax in 2016

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Members involved with two important local agencies got huge news this week. Among the more than three dozen bills that Gov. Rick Scott signed into law on Thursday included a child welfare bill that removes both the Hillsborough County Children’s Board and the Pinellas County Juvenile Welfare Board from having to go before local voters next year in a referendum to essentially fight for their continued existence. Both agencies are currently funded by property taxes, but those taxes aren’t subject to the whims…

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to you all, which by the way is the earliest we can ever have such a holiday, with this Monday only being the 25th of May. Incidentally, Labor Day will take place as late as it can be this year (September 7), which will actually be a factor in delaying the NFL season by a week, meaning the regular season won’t end until next January. If one of the prerequisites for being a politician is engaging in a…

Bryan Glazer gives $4 million to new Jewish Community Center in West Tampa

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For years, attempts to revive the historic Fort Homer Westerly Armory in West Tampa became a fruitless endeavor — but that finally changed two years ago, when the Tampa Jewish Community Center and Federation realized that the 100,000-square-foot space located on North Howard Avenue just south of I-275 could fulfill its needs to have a presence further South of Tampa from their current spot on Gunn Highway. So in October of 2013, the JCC signed a 99-year lease for the building, with an option…

WTSP: TPD, Bob Buckhorn say no need for further review on race arrest rates

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After calling for federal review of police practices in vehicle and bicycle code enforcement, both Tampa police and Mayor Bob Buckhorn insist there is no need to further expand an upcoming Justice Department investigation. This is despite a WTSP-TV report showing the Tampa Police Department arrested more blacks than any other law enforcement agency on Florida. According to reporter Noah Pransky, the TPD cites a “zero-tolerance” crime policy for its elevated arrest rates, and a correspondingly high arrest rate of non-black…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A half-hour after Eric Ward was named the new police chief for the city of Tampa, two City Council members joined a coalition of activist groups who again called on the Tampa Police Department to temporarily stop their current bike citation policy —  at least until after the U.S. Justice Department finishes its review of the agency’s practices. Council Chairman Frank Reddick and District 7 Council member Lisa Montelione joined members of the ACLU, CAIR, the NAACP and a host of other…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced this afternoon that Eric Ward will become the new Police Chief for the city of Tampa, effective as of next week. Ward replaces Jane Castor, who retires next week after 31 years on the force, the last five and a half as chief of police. Ward becomes the second black chief in the city’s history (Bennie Holder was the first, serving from 1993-2003). He currently serves as the assistant chief of operations, and was announced months ago…

Tampa town hall meeting on race brings out raw emotions

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Two nights after Baltimore burned in anger at the death of Freddie Gray, the young black man who died in police custody there, mass demonstrations were held in cities like Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Denver; New York City; and Minneapolis on Wednesday night. No such protests occurred in the Tampa Bay area, but Baltimore was very much on the minds of the overflow crowd that crammed into a conference room at the Ferguson Law Center in Tampa. The subject was the…
