in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

As the Florida Aquarium in downtown Tampa prepares to mark its 20th anniversary, officials say the attraction is thriving. The Tampa Tribune reported that attendance has climbed since the aquarium opened back in 1995. Attendance topped 750,000 for the first time in 2014. In its early years, the aquarium’s success was uncertain. The city had to make an unexpected $2.5 million payment on finishing touches before the aquarium opened and the aquarium lost $300,000 its first year. “We are doing…

#2 on list of Tampa Bay’s Most Powerful Politicians — Bob Buckhorn

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Upon taking office, the mayor of Tampa automatically became the area’s most visible leader, which hasn’t been a problem for Bob Buckhorn to embrace. After losing a bid for County Commission in 2004, this longtime public servant/political animal’s time in the spotlight was on life support when he announced in 2010 that he would run to succeed Pam Iorio to lead City Hall. A decided underdog, he barely made it out of the primary election four years ago (topping Dick…

The Hillsborough County Policy Leadership Group met again today to convene. Well, some of them did. The PLG is made up of all of seven members of the Hillsborough County Commission, plus the mayors of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City. HART officials often sit in as well — all charged with crafting a transit plan that may be taken to the voters in the form of a transit tax referendum in 2016. But nearly half the group at todays’ meeting were…

Bob Buckhorn may be neutral about the idea, but the business community is all in when it comes to the possibility of Tampa landing a Cuban Consulate. During his victory celebration, shortly after polls closed, Buckhorn told supporters: “This is the place where people want to be. This is the place that offers…

As expected, voter turnout in Tampa is lagging

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

More than half way through Election Day in Tampa voter turnout was abysmally low, as expected. By 1:30 Tuesday only 2,791 voters had cast a ballot at their precinct. The Election Day turnout so far brings the total voting to just fewer than 22,000 ballots cast. Of those, 16,545 were cast by mail and 2,592 during early voting. Voter turnout so far is at just 10.38 percent and is on track to be less than 12 percent. That would make…

Bob Buckhorn says he wants to see Charlie Miranda elected in District 2 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Admitting that this hasn’t exactly been a very exciting campaign, Bob Buckhorn said today’s municipal election in Tampa is still very important. “Everyone has an obligation to vote,” the mayor declared while coming out of a polling place at the Sandy Freedman Tennis Courts center on Davis Island this morning. “If you don’t vote, don’t complain.” Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Cathy Lynch Buckhorn, along with their two daughters, Grace and Colleen, Tampa’s First Family came out of the voting booth a little…
