Mitch Perry Report for 6.16.16 -CLC clears the path for Rubio

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Politics never takes a day off, and some would probably say it shouldn’t. Take the reaction this week to the shooting massacre in Orlando. Democrats have done what they believe urgently needs to be done to lessen the possibility of further mass gun shootings, by introducing gun control legislation in Washington. In Washington early this morning, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy put himself into the history book with a nearly 15-hour filibuster to force the Senate to take action to address gun violence. Murphy…

Bob Buesing clarifies his stance on TBX

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Speaking with FloridaPolitics.com last week, Democratic Senate District 18 candidate Bob Buesing said that he was maintaining an open mind regarding the Tampa Bay Express project, but said he wanted the Florida Department of Transportation to show more flexibility in working with the local neighborhoods in Tampa that will be directly affected by its implementation. The controversial $3.3 billion toll lanes road project is up for a crucial vote before the Hillsborough County Metropolitan Organization next week. While the business community is…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.13.16 — What happens now?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

So, what now? America suffered through yet another gun shooting massacre over the weekend in Orlando, and by now you know all the relevant details. The question is: as a society, do we just stay sad and then move on stoically? “This massacre is, therefore, a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school or in a house of worship, or in a movie…

Bob Buesing says he was compelled to run in the SD 18 seat

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa attorney Bob Buesing says if the Florida Legislature were simply “doing its job” when it comes to contending with early education issues, he wouldn’t be disrupting his relatively good life to engage in running for the state Legislature at the age of 62. But he says that after years of working with nonprofits that have sent brain scientists, economists and military leaders to advocate with legislators on that topic, he’s reached the conclusion that they simply don’t listen. “If I thought every…

Dana Young cited as “Republican force” in Roll Call

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

In Tallahassee, Tampa Rep. Dana Young has long been considered a pol whose career may transcend the House. Combine her political bloodline (grandfather was Senate President, uncle served in the House) and prowess on the campaign trail (soundly defeated all comers in a swing seat since 2010) and it’s not hard to see Young has more juice than the average mid-bencher. That line of thinking recently got national attention when CQ Roll Call’s Elvina Nawaguna profiled the House Majority Leader and Senate District 18…

Dana Young raises more than $53K in April in bid for SD 18 seat

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tampa Republican Dana Young raised more $53,350 in April, in her first full month of fundraising since declaring for the new Senate District 18 seat in January. Because lawmakers can’t fundraise while in session, Young only seriously began fundraising last month (there was one sole contribution in March). She was able to move the war chest over from her House campaign account, however, including a $110,000 haul back in December. Young has represented District 60 in Hillsborough County since 2010, and announced…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.3.16 – Only six more months of hearing about Hillary vs.The Donald – every day

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well today’s the Indiana primary, and aren’t you all excited about that? I didn’t think so. A CNN/ORC poll released  yesterday shows that more than eight of ten Americans believe Hillary Clinton will challenge Donald Trump for president in November. That was taken before Indiana votes today, or Nebraska next week, or California and New Jersey next month. But it’s still more fun to talk about a contested convention than start talking everyday about a Hillary vs. Donald confrontation, since that’s still…
