Charlie Crist appoints Jim Smith, former BP lobbyist, for lawsuits against BP

in Statewide by

Great story from Beach Peanuts that has yet to bubble to the mainstream media. While we sit here in Florida waiting for the oil that may come ashore along with the dispersant BP keeps spraying in spite of the EPA, we’re supposed to believe that Gov. Charlie Crist is doing everything possible for our state, or at least that’s what Charlie would have us believe. So naturally you would think that the appointment of two former attorney generals to begin…

Widget measures how much oil has spewed from BP leak

in Apolitical by

To keep tabs on the amount of oil that has leaked (and is still doing so) from the Horizon rig, PBS has created a widget that lets you see how much oil has spewed forth thus far — depending on which organization’s estimate you’re going with. That’s the news from BP CEO Tony Hayward, who just emerged from a closed-door meeting with Gov. Charlie Crist. State officials have been calling for an advertising campaign as Panhandle beach resorts and restaurants head into their 90-day tourist season. Despite the oil plume still 70 milesfrom Florida’s…

BP chief says catastrophic oil spill really not all that big

in Uncategorized by

“The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.” — Tony Hayward, CEO of British Petroleum, attempts to put the now-underestimated Deepwater Horizon oil spill into perspective with that big, blue ocean thing

NY Times: Doubts on estimate of volume of oil spilling in Gulf

in Uncategorized by

Two weeks ago, the government put out a round estimate of the size of the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico: 5,000 barrels a day. Repeated endlessly in news reports, it has become conventional wisdom. But scientists and environmental groups are raising sharp questions about that estimate, declaring that the leak must be far larger. They also criticize BP for refusing to use well-known scientific techniques that would give a more precise figure. The criticism escalated on Thursday, a day after…
