Email insights: David Jolly says he’s already under attack by special interests

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Just hours after launching his 2016 U.S. Senate bid, Congressman David Jolly is under attack. But his campaign is already busy preparing. According to a new email from campaign manager Nick Hansen, the Washington D.C. special interest establishment wasted no time pouncing on the Indian Shores Republican, who is seeking Marco Rubio’s open Senate seat. “Organizations that are part of the selfish politics in Washington put loyalty to ideological scorecards over allegiance to our nation,” Hansen writes. Jolly is “running…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A new survey from St. Pete Polls of a newly reconfigured Congressional District 13 map shows that a potential Charlie Crist vs. Rick Baker matchup could be a cliffhanger. The survey shows Crist leading with 46.2 percent of the vote, to Baker’s 42.2 percent. The remaining 11.6 percent are undecided. Baker leads the only declared Democrat in the CD 13 race, Eric Lynn, by a 51-28 percent margin, with 20 percent undecided. The Florida Supreme Court declared earlier this month that a total of…

David Jolly releases first U.S. Senate campaign video

in 2017/Top Headlines by

U.S. Rep. David Jolly released the first official campaign video of his run for the U.S. Senate on Wednesday. Entitled simply “The Conservative,” the new ad touts his ideological credentials on issues related to education, Florida fisheries and veterans’ affairs in an appeal to the GOP base. “A little more than a year ago,” Jolly begins, Pinellas voters elected the 42-year-old lawmaker “in a special election that the pundits said we couldn’t win; a Republican couldn’t win; a conservative couldn’t win.” Jolly —…

The irony of how redistricting has resurrected Charlie Crist

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

While thinning files last week, I came across one labeled “Crist” and wondered whether to dump it. After successive losses for the U.S. Senate and for governor again, hadn’t Charlie reached the end of the line? No, I thought, something will happen to bring him back. The next day, something did. It was the Florida Supreme Court’s dramatic decision to order major changes in eight of Florida’s gerrymandered congressional districts. Among them are the 13th, lying exclusively within Pinellas County,…

David Jolly — one year in as Pinellas’ representative in Washington

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On the last Friday in March, David Jolly spoke before nearly 500 Pinellas County Republicans at the party’s annual Lincoln Day dinner. While offering up a somewhat predictable attack on Barack Obama’s foreign policy initiatives, somewhat surprisingly, he also reserved plenty of disdain toward his fellow Republicans regarding a recent vote on the House budget. “There’s no reason for anybody to serve in the U.S Congress if one day they’re going to look back and see that the debt increased…

PolitiFact: Charlie Justice’s ad tying Bill Young to Jack Abramoff is essentially baseless

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

In a new Web ad, state Sen. Charlie Justice, D-St. Petersburg, comes armed with ominous music and some sloppy Photoshop work to link opponent Rep. C.W. Bill Young with jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff. But does Justice, who is seeking to unseat the 20-term Pinellas County Republican, have any facts to back up the association? PolitiFact Florida decided to break down the two-minute ad to find out. The ad describes “Abramoff Inc.” vs. “Young Inc.,” and spends two minutes drawing parallels…
