Jane Castor mostly unrepentant as she goes before Tampa City Council on “biking while black” controversy

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Accompanied by three burly members of the Police Benevolent Association, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor went before the City Council this morning for nearly an hour, discussing the issues around the disproportionate number of citations written against black citizens in the city that were exposed in a Tampa Bay Times story last weekend. The charges have prompted Castor and Mayor Bob Buckhorn to call on the Department of Justice to review the department’s performance regarding the citations. But as she…

Tampa wants dibs on any future U.S.-Cuba pact signings

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

They’ve already declared their support for a Cuban consulate to be housed in Tampa. Now they want any major agreement between the Cuban and U.S. governments to be signed in Tampa as well. By a 5-0 vote, Tampa City Council on Thursday passed “The Tampa Accord.” The  resolution proposed by Councilwoman Yolie Capin offers the city to host any official agreement signings between the two neighboring countries. Charlie Miranda and Lisa Montelione were not at the dais at the time…

After 8 years, Mary Mulhern signs off from the Tampa City Council

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It was someone fitting that on her last daytime meeting serving on the Tampa City Council, Mary Mulhern chaired a workshop discussion on the update of the city’s comprehensive plan regarding climate change and raising sea levels. The environment has always been a central concern for Mulhern, who is leaving the Council after eight years next week due to term limits. “I know that some of you and I have had our disagreements and we’ve always been collegial and I appreciate that,”…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.24.15 — Election season ends in Tampa tonight

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The city of Tampa’s uneventful election season comes to a halt tonight. By 8 p.m. we should have a winner in the only City Council race that remains undecided — the District 6 battle between Guido Maniscalco and Jackie Toledo. I hate the overuse of the term “Seinfeld” to describe something as being about nothing. So I’ll refrain from calling this a “Seinfeld election season,” but really, what have been the big issues in the city that have been discussed…

Jackie Toledo says if she’s elected, she’ll support Charlie Miranda to remain Council chair

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although Charlie Miranda hasn’t endorsed anyone in the Tampa City Council District 6 race scheduled for next Tuesday, he himself received an endorsement of sorts today from Jackie Toledo, running against Guido Maniscalco in next week’s runoff election. “Chairman Miranda has done a great job as our Council’s chairman and there is no reason to take the gavel away. If elected to the City Council, I will enthusiastically vote for him as our next chairman,” said Toledo. The issue of…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.20.15 — March sadness

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s the first full weekend of the NCAA Basketball tournament, the time when some writers wax absurd about “brackets” and “the insanity of March Madness.” And yes, there were a couple of thrilling upsets and buzzard-beaters yesterday to begin the first full day of the 68-team championship. As a basketball aficionado, however, I’ve been calling out the college game for several years now as being a severely weakened product, and thankfully, the mainstream media is finally getting the picture. As…

The Tampa City Council argues about diversity vs. status quo in choosing who will lead them

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa City Council has an election every year to choose a new chairperson. But the majority has chosen the status quo in recent years, continuing to choose longtime member Charlie Miranda as their leader, with nary a vote for any of the other six members on the board. That lack of diversity in leadership has bothered a few members of the Council, leading to a proposal today by Councilwoman Yolie Capin that would place a limit of one year…
