in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida Senate’s Rules Committee on Thursday unanimously recommended removing a Confederate flag from the chamber’s official seal and replacing it with the state flag. Senators on the panel voted for the move 9-0. The matter now goes before the full Senate, which could consider it at the beginning of the 2016 Legislative Session in January. The change will require a two-thirds vote of the chamber. As reported earlier, the Senate is reviewing its seal after a renewed debate about Confederate symbols,…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A Miami-Dade lawmaker introduced legislation on Tuesday to replace the statue of a Confederate Army general at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. If passed, the bill (HB 141) would ask Congress to remove the statue of Gen. Mitch Perry Report 8.25.15 – Will Florida GOP Legislature pay any price in ’16?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In a just, accountability-fueled society, Florida Republican lawmakers would pay a price next year for the shenanigans they’ve been up to this year. As reported by the AP’s Gary Fineout, the nine-day June special session that occurred after House Speaker Steve Crisafulli pulled his members off the floor 72 hours before the session was scheduled to end in the spring cost taxpayers $651,000, the costliest special session in the past 15 years. We won’t know for awhile what the costs will be…

Kickstarter project aims to erect unity flag next to giant I-4 Confederate flag

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The giant Confederate flag on Florida’s I-4 highway has been pissing people off since it went up in 2008. It’s 30 feet tall and 60 feet wide and flies 139 feet in the air. When you drive by, it’s like the thing’s screaming at you — what it says depends on where you stand on the matter. A group called Harmony Branch clearly doesn’t like it. And the organization is ready to scream even louder than the notorious Stars and Bars flying…

NASCAR fans defend, display Confederate flags at Daytona

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Steven Rebenstorf has numerous flags flying atop his canopy tent inside Daytona International Speedway. The Confederate flag is front and center. It’s been like that for years. And the 57-year-old Rebenstorf has no plans to take it down — not even if NASCAR decides to ban the embattled flag from its racetracks. “They’d have to come and get it,” Rebenstorf said Saturday, pointing out that his American flag purposely flies a few inches higher than the rest. Rebenstorf and others…

Gary Stein: Symbols and cymbals mark Fourth of July

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

As we prepare to celebrate the holiday formally called Independence Day but more commonly known as the Fourth of July, visions of fireworks, barbecue and red, white and blue come to mind. But, taking a step back, I think a more apropos name, albeit less patriotic sounding would be to call it Symbols Day. Most holidays are filled with symbolism, but as secular, government-sanctioned holidays go, “The Fourth” beats them all. Symbols can range from icons to symbolic acts. Flags…
