Offering sympathy but no easy answers, President Barack Obama came Thursday to Orlando to try to console those mourning the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Air Force One touched down at midday in this grief-stricken community, where Obama planned to spend a few hours meeting in private with families of the 49 victims, with survivors and with local law enforcement officials who responded to the shooting. He planned to emphasize his solidarity with Orlando’s gays and lesbians but…

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Democratic U.S. Reps. Corrine Brown and Alan Grayson — whose districts include the Pulse nightclub and nearby neighborhoods — made renewed calls Monday for Congress to ban assault weapons. Brown, whose Jacksonville-based 5th Congressional District stretches to Orlando and includes the site of the Pulse massacre scene, said her office is in discussions with that of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, to work up a bill of their own to reinstitute a ban on assault weapons. “Law enforcement officers, other people say, ‘why do…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The winners of the congressional redistricting fight now are sending U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown their own $23,600 bill for consultants. The League of Women Voters of Florida, Common Cause and others already filed a motion for sanctions against the North Florida congresswoman for unsuccessfully challenging them in federal court. Court dockets show they’ve now added a “bill of costs” for the consultants they used, adding “expert witness fees” to their previous demand for an “award of attorneys’ fees,” now estimated at $220,000. Brown, however,…

Redistricting plaintiffs seek sanctions against Corrine Brown

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The winners of the congressional redistricting fight are seeking to make Corrine Brown pay for challenging them. The League of Women Voters of Florida, Common Cause and others last week filed a motion for sanctions against the north Florida congresswoman. Brown had unsuccessfully fought the redrawing of Florida’s congressional districts. Specifically, the Jacksonville Democrat had asked the court to set aside her redrawn seat, the 5th Congressional District. Brown said her new district violates federal voting laws by cutting down the influence of minority voters and discriminates against them. A panel…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

In a typical election cycle, about 90 percent of House members and 70 percent of U.S. senators win re-election. As has often been noted, Americans hate Congress, but love their own representative. In the 2016 congressional election in Florida, close to half of the delegation will be replaced. As David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report notes, “Florida is primed to have the most turnover in the country.” Why will Florida experience such unprecedented turnover? The answer: retirements, reapportionment and…

Gwen Graham says she is ‘seriously considering’ running for Governor in 2018

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Democratic U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham says she’s giving up on Congress and “seriously considering running for governor in 2018.” In an early Thursday email, the Tallahassee congresswoman wrote, “I have major news, and I want you to hear it first” (even though at least two news media outlets actually broke the story first). “The politicians, lobbyists and courts in Tallahassee have been working to redraw and divide the North Florida district I represent — they’ve turned what was an example of a…
