Florida Black caucus leaders, scores of African-American officials endorse Hillary Clinton

in 2017 by

A day after Hillary Clinton won a majority of Democratic delegates up for grabs in last night’s Super Tuesday primaries – partly on the strength of her support in minority communities – about 100 African-American Florida elected officials came out in support the former Secretary of State’s bid for the White House. Among them were the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, and its new chair Tampa Rep. Ed Narain. “Hillary Clinton is the leader who will always stand and fight for communities of color across…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tallahassee – WWGGD? Okay, nobody is saying that, but let me pose the question that Florida Democrat will begin talking about more frequently as the year progresses – What Will Gwen Graham Do? The North Florida Congresswoman told reporters at a news conference in Tallahassee yesterday that she still has not decided if she’ll run for re-election to her 2nd Congressional District seat. As most know, Graham’s district essentially was erased during redistricting, and as it stands now, if she…

Gwen Graham still hasn’t decided on political future

in 2017/Statewide by

North Florida Congresswoman Gwen Graham on Tuesday said she still has not decided whether to run again for her 2nd Congressional District seat. Graham, a Tallahassee Democrat, spoke with reporters after a constituent-services recognition event at City Hall. A recent Florida Supreme Court-ordered redistricting has made the district so strongly Republican that’s it’s unlikely Graham or any other Democrat could win the seat. The next election is in November. “There is, right now, a motion for an injunction that has been filed,” she…

Legislature wants to be dropped from federal redistricting lawsuit

The Republican-led Florida Legislature is asking a federal judge to dismiss the House and Senate from an ongoing lawsuit challenging the state’s congressional map. A spokeswoman for Senate President Andy Gardiner said he does not see a reason for the Legislature to defend the court…

Arthenia Joyner files bill to create independent redistricting commission

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Amidst a chaotic 2015 legislative session regarding the redistricting of congressional and legislative districts, Tampa Democratic state Senator Arthenia Joyner has filed legislation to create an independent commission to deal with the issue every ten years. Joyner’s bill (SB 1252) calls for a constitutional amendment that would create a commission to consist of 12 members. There would be a number of provisions to ensure the “independence” of the board,  including banning those who have donated a maximum allowable political contribution to any candidate for any statewide…

Corrine Brown’s federal lawsuit “has very little chance of succeeding”

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown is pursuing a federal lawsuit, Brown v. Detzner, in the wake of the Florida Supreme Court’s approval of a redrawn congressional map for the state. Brown, along with the Congressional Black Caucus, argue that the change means “substantial retrogression” for African-American communities, along with significant dilution of the black vote in her district. The ruling changes Brown’s district considerably, reshaping it from one that snakes southward from Jacksonville down to Orlando, to an east-west configuration, going from…

Chris Hand rebuffs possible Andrew Gillum Congress bid, calls Corrine Brown “miracle worker”

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

In terms of Jacksonville politics, few have a résumé to match that of former Chief of Staff Chris Hand, who worked in the Alvin Brown administration for its entire four years, and before that was press secretary for then-Sen. Bob Graham and campaign manager for Alex Sink when she won as state CFO in 2006. Hand is working on a new edition of his book with Graham, “America, the Owner’s Manual: Making Government Work for You.” Hand knows the players and knows the…
