AFP airs ads thanking GOP lawmakers for refusing to expand health care in Florida

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida Legislature’s failure last week to come to an agreement on redrawing the state’s congressional maps was just the latest example of state Republicans unable to come together. A battle over Medicaid expansion roiled the Legislature for most of its Regular Session this spring. Nearly everyone in the state Senate supported proposals that would have expanded Medicaid and provided health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of low-income residents, but the House of Representatives remained resolute in its opposition. And despite…

Americans for Prosperity names annual ‘Champions of Economic Freedom’ in 2015 session scorecard

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida arm of the conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity has issued its annual legislative scorecard, which ranks state legislators based on their propensity to vote “pro-economic freedom.” The group graded all 160 state lawmakers based on their votes on economic issues. Votes considered in favor of deregulation were rewarded, whereas votes that reined in industry were given negative scores. As was the case in years past, Republicans did well and House Republicans did even better. Forty-six members of the House, or…

Dana Young for Florida Senate?

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If things break as the Florida Supreme Court has foreshadowed, House Majority Leader Dana Young might be headed to the state Senate. While sources are conflicted as to whether a likely redrawing of the upper chamber’s district boundaries will leave Young with a viable district, there is broad agreement on one thing: If she runs, she’ll certainly be competitive. “If a new Senate map looked anything like the proposal from the Fair Districts Coalition, Dana’s profile would be exceptionally strong,” said Democratic strategist Steve Schale, referring…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Among the many local projects that didn’t escape Rick Scott’s veto pen last week was $2 million earmarked for the Tampa Innovation Alliance, the nascent public-private agency charged with redeveloping the university area of North Tampa. But Mark Sharpe, the agency’s executive director, insists that it’s not a big deal. He says the organization never envisioned receiving state money at all in its first year of operations, and instead hoped to simply capture the attention of the Hillsborough County Commission. The County…

Tampa Theater officials shrug off $1 million rejection by Rick Scott

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Since its creation in 1926, the Tampa Theatre has been one of the crown jewels of Tampa’s downtown cultural life. But like so many other classic movie houses built back then, it almost went out of business in the 1970s, but was saved by the community. Since 1977, it’s been owned by the City of Tampa and run as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Sixty percent of its operating budget comes through ticket and concession income, with the rest coming to the Tampa Theatre Foundation…
