Darryl Rouson gets 61 more votes than Ed Narain and is the unofficial winner in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After a long delay in collecting some ballots in Hillsborough County, St. Petersburg based attorney and outgoing House District 70 Representative Darryl Rouson has received 61 more votes than Ed Narain in the Senate District 19 Democratic Primary race, out of 37,687 votes cast. Because of the narrow margin, there will likely be an automatic machine recount, but unless something dramatic occurs with the recount, Rouson will have won the primary, and most likely the general in the fall, as the district is overwhelmingly Democratic…

‘Black Votes Matter’ slate card without disclaimer upsets some Hillsborough County candidates

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s certainly not the first slate card making the rounds since early voting began, but a “Black Votes Matter” handout that does not include a disclaimer regarding who paid for it has upset some Hillsborough County candidates on Election Day. This reporter picked up the slate card while visiting voting precinct No. 305 at the New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Columbus Avenue in East Tampa. The card was handed out by a woman wearing a Dianne Hart T-shirt. Hart is a…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.30.16 – Election Day questions

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Primary Election Day is here, finally, for those of us who care. Because that isn’t close to the majority of registered voters in Florida. Going into today, the turnout by percentage via early and absentee voting here in Hillsborough County where I’m located was lower than it turned out to be in 2012, which Congresswoman Kathy Castor says is disappointing. We’re talking below 20 percent, folks. Whether that percentage might increase if the election weren’t held in the last week of August…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.29.16 — Colin Kaepernick says he can take the heat for speaking out

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The National Football League concluded its third and most interesting weekend of pre-season games last night, and while there are stories galore about what’s happening on the gridiron (Denver sacking Mark Sanchez, Tony Romo out for a few months with another injury, Jameis Winston looking quite impressive with the Tampa Bay Bucs against the lowly Cleveland Browns), the big story was out of Santa Clara, where 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem before their game against Green Bay on Friday night, the third…

Donations from committee backing Rod Smith came within weeks of FDP ad buys in SD 8

in Statewide by

A political committee tied to Democrat Rod Smith has given more than $393,000 to the Florida Democratic Party since May, around the same time party began airing TV ads supporting him. The state party can purchase ad time at a more affordable rate than candidates’ committees, but state law prohibits political parties and affiliated committees from accepting contributions that have been earmarked for a particular candidate. Independent Leadership for Florida, the political committee backing Smith’s Senate District 8 bid, gave $393,900 to…

Darryl Rouson and Alan Grayson team up in Tampa to say they both speak “truth to power”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Alan Grayson and Darryl Rouson teamed up Thursday night to try to win support in their respective campaigns while speaking in northwest Hillsborough County. “I am honored to be here today to introduce a man who from Day 1 in Washington D.C. has taken the tea party agenda to the stage, and has whooped them every time he got a chance to do so,” Rouson said in introducing Grayson to a crowd of 20 people who gathered at the Upper Tampa Bay Regional…
