in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The Senate District 19 race is wide open, with no clear front runner emerging just weeks ahead of the Democratic primary. A new survey by St. Pete Polls — commissioned by FloridaPolitics.com — found 26 percent of likely Democratic primary votersaid they would vote for Ed Narain if the primary were held today. Nearly 23 percent picked Darryl Rouson, followed by 18 percent who picked Augie Ribeiro. Betty Reed pulled 16 percent support. About 17 percent of voters said they were still…

Democratic legislative candidates talk Donald Trump, reparations and diapers in Tiger Bay Forum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although many polls show the presidential election could go either way, the Democratic candidates in Florida’s Senate District 19 and House District 70 at Friday’s Suncoast Tiger Bay Club meeting say they can’t fathom an America with Donald Trump leading the nation. “There are 45 million Republicans in this country, and that’s the best they can come up with?” asked an incredulous Dan Fiorini, a first-time candidate in HD 70 who served as a legislative aide to former Democratic state Rep. Helen Spivey two decades ago.…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.14.16 – Patrick Murphy on defense, again

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Political maxim #459 is “if you’re explaining, you’re losing.” Let’s go to Patrick Murphy and his campaign for senate, shall we? The Murphy camp is furiously shooting down a report by Alex Leary in the Tampa Bay Times published last night that said that his congressional office sought to delay news about relief for businesses affected by the toxic algae crisis so he could announce it at a news conference today. Leary reported that an exchange of emails between Murphy’s office and the…

Darryl Rouson and Ed Narain battle it out on policy in SD 19 NAACP sponsored debate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The issue of school choice and vouchers is a touchy one for Democrats. In the Democratic Party platform that was completed last weekend in Orlando, it declares support for “high-quality public charter schools” and opposition to “for-profit charter schools focused on making a profit off of public resources.” The national NAACP, however, is against public support for school choice and vouchers, saying it takes away resources for public schools. At an NAACP sponsored campaign forum Tuesday night with the four Democrats running for the Senate District 19 seat in South…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.13.16 – Conservatism is still running strong, Jeb Bush insists

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jeb Bush says whatever you want to call Donald Trump, don’t call him a conservative. “Conservatism is temporarily dead,” the former Florida Governor told Nicole Wallace on an MSNBC special that aired Monday night. “I mean, if you look at it, we have two candidates. Donald Trump is barely a Republican. He’s certainly not a conservative.” Bush makes the point, however, that while that might not matter much in the presidential sweepstakes, conservatism is still powerful across the country. “I…

Augie Ribeiro pours in $300 K of his own funds to compete in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Augie Ribeiro has a few disadvantages in his attempt to win the Senate District 19 race this summer. The civil justice attorney is by far the least known of the four major candidates in the Democratic Primary taking place on August 30. He got into the contest at nearly the last minute, filing just a day before qualifying ended, and he’s the only non African-American in a minority majority district. However, he does have lots of cash. Ribeiro announced today that he…
